Helmet Horror: Man Jailed for Brutal Attack on Moped Rider
A man smashed a moped rider’s teeth with the rider’s own helmet in a savage attack outside flats in Peterborough. Billy Smith, 26, flew into a rage in May 2018 after the victim refused to let him into the building.
Violent Assault Over Flat Access
Smith, from Wisbech, spotted the moped rider loading his belongings into the under-seat storage. Smith demanded entry into the block of flats in Woodston. When the victim said he didn’t have the keys, Smith lost it.
He grabbed the victim’s helmet and punched him twice in the face, then struck him once on the back and chest. The victim was left bleeding heavily from the mouth as Smith stormed inside.
Threats and Arrest Follow Attack
Smith returned minutes later, threatening to come back that night and steal the moped. Police soon arrived and launched a hunt that led to Smith’s arrest for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Justice Served at Cambridge Crown Court
On 17 August, Smith was jailed for one year and slapped with a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim. Detective Constable Fran Scott said:
“This violent, unprovoked attack has resulted in a great deal of physical and emotional trauma for the victim. I hope this sentence will give Smith sufficient time to re-think his actions, and he will restrain himself from lashing out again in future.”
