Drunk Driver Jailed Over Tragic M4 Crash That Killed Two Kids
Martin Newman was locked up for nine years after causing the deaths of little Gracie Ann and Jayden Lee Lucas on the M4 near Newport.
Family Furious After Sentence Review Denied
The family’s bid to have Newman’s sentence reviewed under the Unduly Lenient Sentences scheme has been flatly rejected.
“I’d like to see the man who said it’s fair to come and say it to my face,” said devastated grandfather Jason Lucas.
“He took two kids away from us. What we’ve had to go through, it’s terrible. I wouldn’t want that for anybody. It just ripped us apart.”
Tragic Crash Details
Jayden Lee, three, and his four-year-old sister Gracie Ann, from Tredegar in Blaenau Gwent, were heading home from a birthday party when Newman’s van smashed into their family car on 5 February.
Newman, 41, from Croeserw, near Port Talbot, had been drinking red wine and had cocaine in his system behind the wheel of his Ford Transit van.
Legal Response and Why Sentence Was Upheld
The Attorney General’s Office revealed the Solicitor General was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the tragedy but ruled the nine-year sentence was not unduly lenient.
“After careful consideration the Solicitor General concluded this case cannot properly be referred to the Court of Appeal,” an official statement said.
“A referral under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme requires a sentence to be not just lenient but grossly so, or outside the reasonable range for the offending. The high threshold was not met.”
Newman pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, seriously injuring Ms Lucas, and drink and drug driving.
The family vowed to fight on, calling for a harsher punishment that matches their heartbreaking loss.
