Pharma Firm Hit with £1.2M Fine Over Baby TPN Scandal
ITH Pharma, operating out of Premier Park in NW10, has been slapped with a hefty £1.2 million fine at Southwark Crown Court. The company pleaded guilty to failing to conduct proper risk assessments and supplying substandard medicinal products linked to 19 babies who received Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) in 2014.
Serious Failings Exposed in Lengthy Probe
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard, who spearheaded the complex investigation, said:
“This has been a lengthy and complex investigation and our thoughts today remain with the families of all those affected. We commend their bravery and dignity in coming forward and reliving their most difficult moments. We hope they can take some comfort in the fact the criminal proceedings have now concluded.”
Leonard also praised his team’s dedication, singling out Detective Sergeant Simon Dawes for his tireless work throughout the probe.
Investigation Uncovered Major Safety Breaches
The probe began in September 2014 following a referral from the Coroner for Inner South London. The Met’s Specialist Crime Command led the case alongside the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), Public Health England (PHE), and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Thousands of documents were combed through. Experts in aseptic microbiology were consulted, revealing critical failures in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Medicines Act. This evidence forced ITH Pharma to admit guilt on all counts.
