Teen Thug Nabbed After Brazen Moped Robberies in Richmond Park
A 17-year-old moped bandit, who was just 15 when he launched a string of violent robberies, was finally caught after walking straight into a café packed with police plotting his arrest. The teen faced Croydon Youth Court on 16 March and admitted to two counts of moped-enabled robbery, one attempted robbery, and possession of criminal property.
On 18 April, Wimbledon Youth Court sentenced him to 12 months—half behind bars and half on licence.
Shocking Attacks on Cyclists
Detective Constable Ian Croxford from Operation Venice slammed the teen’s brutal crimes.
“The defendant carried out terrifying offences with no regard for victims’ safety, ramming them off bikes and dragging them along the road. Luckily, no one suffered more serious injuries.” “Victims have told us how deeply these robberies shook their lives. No one should have to change their behaviour out of fear, and we’re glad justice has been served.”
The attacks began on 7 October 2021, when the teen and three others rode a stolen moped into Richmond Park. They targeted a high-value bike rider, professional cyclist Alex Richardson. The gang rammed him at speed, knocking him off his £15,000 custom-built bike. At knifepoint, they stole the bike as Mr Richardson was dragged across the road, leaving him with injuries to his ribs, knees, back, ankles, arms, and head.
More Robberies and Narrow Escapes
The violent spree continued on 11 October. In Roehampton Lane, a 50-something man was nearly mown down and robbed but managed to escape. Minutes later, the teen struck again on Danebury Avenue, SW15, threatening another man with a machete and stealing his bike after causing him to fall and injure himself.
Despite an extensive CCTV trawl and warrants executed at several homes, police initially failed to find their prime suspect. Fate intervened when the teen casually walked into a café frequented by the officers hunting him. He was swiftly arrested with a machete, balaclava, and a large haul of cash on him.
Police matched clothing from his addresses to victim descriptions, and his phone contained a photo of Mr Richardson’s stolen bike taken minutes after the theft.
Victim Speaks Out
“This crime made me genuinely fear for my life—I thought I could be murdered right then. I suffer anxiety, stress, and sleepless nights. My family’s safety is constantly at risk; we’ve hired overnight security more than once.” “I’m terrified to ride my bike on open roads now, and my children are traumatised by what they witnessed and my injuries. No one should have to live like this.” – Alex Richardson
Detective Constable Croxford added: “A huge thank you to the public who responded to our media appeals and shared CCTV footage. We urge victims and witnesses to come forward immediately—the golden hour is vital for catching crooks. We’re determined to cut down these crimes and boost detection rates.”
