Gabriel Calin has been locked up for over six years after trying to dodge the law by fleeing abroad.
Late-Night Attack Shocks Town
Just after 1am on Tuesday 16 April 2019, a teenage girl was walking down Lower Stone Street when she noticed a man trailing her.
She slowed to let him pass, and he did—only to turn off into a side street.
But then, on Loose Road, the victim spotted the same man standing right beside her.
Brutal Assault on Young Woman
The stranger spoke briefly before suddenly grabbing her hand and clocking her in the face.
She hit the floor, where he landed two more powerful punches.
The victim fought back, screaming and kicking until her attacker bolted. She was rushed to hospital with serious facial injuries.
High-Speed Manhunt and Extradition
Police launched a full investigation, knocking on doors and scouring CCTV to track the assailant’s movements.
They identified the attacker as Calin, who had treated a hand injury before skipping the country on 21 April.
Calin, with no fixed address, was eventually found in Bucharest. Kent Police applied for his extradition.
On 29 July 2020, officers flew him back to the UK to face justice.
Conviction and Jail Sentence
Calin was charged with attempted wounding with intent. Despite pleading not guilty, a jury found him guilty after a three-day trial at Maidstone Crown Court on 1 July.
On 13 April 2022, the 29-year-old was sentenced to six years and one month behind bars.
Detective Constable Andy Julier said: “This was a despicable and cowardly attack on a young woman. The force of the punches was so strong that Calin injured his hand.
“Our investigation was complex but thorough. I’m glad we brought him before the court to answer for his appalling crime.”
“The victim has needed ongoing dental treatment, and this callous attack continues to affect her quality of life.”
“I commend her courage in supporting the investigation and thank the witnesses who helped us bring Calin to justice.”
