Wiltshire Police Nab Nearly 80 Drink and Drug Drivers in Two Weeks

Crackdown Sees Dozens Busted

Wiltshire Police have arrested or reported almost 80 drivers for drink or drug driving in just two weeks. Between 19 and 31 August, officers targeted suspected offenders using tips from the public and community intelligence.

  • 32 drivers arrested for exceeding the legal alcohol limit
  • 36 drivers arrested over the drug limit
  • 3 arrested for being unfit to drive due to drink or drugs
  • 8 reported to court after hospital treatment following crashes linked to drink or drug driving

Police Warn: Drinking at Home Is No Excuse

Inspector Mark Freeman warned that although social drinking habits have changed due to COVID-19, the risks of drink driving remain just as deadly.

“People might think drinking at home or friends’ houses is safer, but you can easily overestimate how much you’ve consumed,” Freeman said. “Pouring your own drinks or topping up could mean you’re over the limit without realising.”

He added a stark warning: “If you’re drinking alcohol, don’t get behind the wheel. The dangers are very real—you could seriously hurt or kill yourself or others.”

Drug Driving On The Rise, Police Say

Sergeant Will Ayres highlighted a surge in drug driving, especially related to cannabis and other illegal substances. He stressed many drivers don’t realise how long drugs stay in their system or how badly they impair driving ability.

“We carry drug wipe kits that quickly detect drugs in your system,” Ayres said. “Don’t risk it. If you’ve taken drugs, don’t drive.”

Police Urge Public to Report Reckless Drivers

Most arrests resulted from intelligence-led stops based on community reports. Wiltshire Police urge anyone aware of regular drink or drug drivers to call 101 or 999 immediately.

They ask for detailed info, including vehicle registration, driver description, and usual times or days the offences happen.
