Four Asylum Seekers Die in Dinghy Tragedy Off Kent Coast

Four men, two Afghans and two Senegalese, drowned when their “wholly unsuitable” dinghy capsized last week in the English Channel. The deadly crossing from France ended in disaster off the coast of Romney Marsh, Kent.

Rescue Effort Saves 39 But Four Perish

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, December 14. HM Coastguard alerted Kent Police at 3:42 a.m. A massive search and rescue was launched, involving 14 boats, four helicopters, and a fixed-wing aircraft.

Despite the efforts, four bodies were recovered from the water. The survivors, including men, women, and children from Senegal, Afghanistan, India, and Iraq, were rushed to Dover’s asylum seeker reception centre for urgent medical attention.

Inquest Opens But Suspended Amid Police Probe

Katrina Hepburn, area coroner for Central and South East Kent, officially opened the inquest at Maidstone’s County Hall but suspended it pending the ongoing criminal investigation.

Detective Inspector Ross Gurden confirmed that the victims remain unidentified as recovery teams attempt to salvage data from their water-damaged phones and personal paperwork.

“The victims were in a large rubber dinghy with an outboard motor, which was completely inadequate for the crossing,” said DI Gurden.

All victims were declared dead between 6:22 a.m. and 11:24 a.m. on the day of the tragedy, with drowning confirmed as the preliminary cause of death.

Trafficker Charged After Tragic Crossing

Police have launched a criminal investigation. Ibrahima Bah, 19, appeared in Folkestone Magistrates Court charged with piloting the doomed boat. He pleaded not guilty to facilitating illegal entry and remains in custody, with his next hearing scheduled for January 16 at Canterbury Crown Court.

The search for four more missing people was called off on December 16, leaving the local community once again confronting the grim reality of perilous Channel crossings.
