Essex Cops Nail Laughing Gas Dealer in Major Drug Bust
Essex Police have landed a major victory against the illegal nitrous oxide trade, cracking down on a key player in a wide-reaching drug network.
Traffic Stop Uncovers Laughing Gas Empire
Thomas Salton, 30, was stopped by officers in Basildon on December 1 during a routine traffic check. Inside his Range Rover, police found party bags stuffed with illicit goods, including nitrous oxide canisters. Further searches revealed evidence linking Salton to a bigger drug operation. At Southend Crown Court on January 8, Salton pleaded guilty to possession of a Class A drug for personal use and possession of criminal property. On February 19, he was handed a hefty 35-month prison sentence for his role in the illegal trade.
Organised Crime Unit Breaks Down the Ring
Detective Sergeant Stephen Robson from Essex’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit revealed the hunt uncovered more than just drugs. “Salton’s operation was highly organised, with detailed customer lists and even non-disclosure agreements,” Robson said. He warned of the wider damage drugs cause, linking their use to community violence and exploitation.
New Laws Back Police Crackdown
The conviction proves the muscle behind recent legislation classifying nitrous oxide as a Class C drug. Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow, Essex Police’s drugs lead, vowed to keep pressing hard. “We remain committed to disrupting drug supply chains and protecting our communities,” he said.
Government Crime and Policing Minister Chris Philp praised the work. “This conviction sends a clear message – drug dealers won’t be tolerated,” Philp said, reinforcing the zero-tolerance approach.
Salton’s Sentence a Warning Shot to Dealers
This case sends a stark warning to anyone dabbling in drug trafficking. Essex Police’s success shows they’re ready to shut down illegal drug markets and shield communities from harm.
