Man Jailed for 12 Years After Ploughing Car Into Pub Crowd
A thug who drove his car into a crowd outside a New Romney pub, leaving seven people injured, has been locked up for 12 years.
Horror Crash Outside New Romney Pub
On the evening of 24 November 2017, just before 10pm, Kent Police rushed to New Romney High Street after reports of a vehicle smashing into a pub. The culprit, 25-year-old James Bates, slammed his silver Vauxhall Corsa into the building by the front door and directly into stunned pub-goers standing outside.
Among the victims, one man suffered severe fractures to his leg and arm after being hit head-on.
Rampage Triggered by Bar Brawl
Bates, from Blenheim Road in Littlestone, had been kicked out of the pub minutes earlier for causing trouble and picking fights with fellow punters. When arrested, he offered no explanation for his terrifying act of violence.
Court Sends Clear Message
At Canterbury Crown Court, Bates pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and six counts of attempted grievous bodily harm. The judge handed him a hefty 12-year prison sentence on 16 November 2018.
Detective Constable Chris Brett said: “James Bates was seen driving around the block to build up speed before ramming his car into the crowd. This was clearly a pre-meditated attack.”
“Considering the damage a car can cause, those outside the pub were lucky their injuries weren’t worse.”
“Being targeted like this, no matter the injury, leaves lasting trauma. I thank everyone who helped with the investigation and prosecution.”
