Ex-Scotland Rugby Star Stuart Hogg Locked Up Over Text Message Breach
Stuart Hogg, former Scotland rugby captain, spent a night behind bars after sending “unpleasant” texts to his estranged wife, defying a court order banning contact. The 32-year-old admitted breaching the order during a hearing at Jedburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Repeated Contact Despite Court Ban
Hogg sent multiple messages to wife Gillian between June 26 and 30, breaking a court injunction designed to keep them apart. Sheriff Kevin McCarron granted him bail so he could attend his brother Graham’s wedding but warned him: any repeat, and bail would be off the table.
“It’s highly unlikely you will be granted bail again if this behaviour continues,” said Sheriff McCarron.
‘Unpleasant’ Texts Fueled by Emotion and Alcohol
Defence lawyer Mat Patrick revealed Gillian initially reached out about financial matters. After seeing a social media video that “struck a chord,” a distressed and intoxicated Hogg sent the texts. Patrick admitted the messages were “unpleasant” and “inappropriate.”
Prosecutor India McLean confirmed the texts were abusive but not threatening. Hogg has been bailed to his brother’s home in Hawick, with the case adjourned to July 15.
Facing Stalking and Domestic Abuse Charges
Hogg previously pleaded not guilty to stalking and domestic abuse charges related to his wife. The stalking charge covers behaviour between 2017 and 2019, while domestic abuse allegations run from 2019 to 2024, including alarming messages and threats of self-harm. A trial is set for July 30 at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.
Rugby Legend’s Fall from Grace
Hogg retired before last year’s World Cup with over 100 caps for Scotland and three British & Irish Lions tours. Scotland’s all-time top try scorer, Hogg earned an MBE in 2024 for services to rugby.
Last November, it emerged he’s dating jockey-turned-TV star Leonna Mayor. The pair recently holidayed in Turkey.
Earlier this year, Hogg revealed he’d spent time in rehab, thanking supporters during “the darkest of times.”
Defence also confirmed Hogg has secured a lucrative two-year contract with French club Montpellier, reportedly earning £350,000 a year as he stages a rugby comeback.
Next Steps in the Legal Drama
The court awaits a psychiatric report before Hogg’s next court date on July 15. His future, both on and off the pitch, remains under a cloud.
