Four Men Jailed Over Death of Rotherham Man Daniel Dix After Football Clash

Four men have been sentenced for their roles in the tragic death of Daniel Dix, who was brutally attacked in Rotherham following a football match.

Fatal Brawl After Sheffield United vs Rotherham United

Daniel Dix, 38, suffered critical injuries during an assault on Bridgegate, Rotherham, on the afternoon of Saturday 9 March 2019. The violence erupted after a football match between Sheffield United and Rotherham United. Despite efforts to save him, Mr Dix died in hospital a week later.

Earlier Guilty Verdicts and New Sentencing

Back in March 2024, Kyle Beech, Brock Playforth, and Liam Green were found guilty of manslaughter and are currently serving prison sentences. This Friday, four more men appeared in court for sentencing after admitting their involvement in the disorder that led to Mr Dix’s death.

Four More Men Sentenced for Affray

  • Cory Andrews, 26, of Tickhill Road, Maltby – 18 months in prison
  • Sam Anscombe, 29, of Walesby Lane, Ollerton – 18 months in prison
  • Brady Stoner, 24, of Nelson Road, Maltby – 2.5 years (18 months for affray plus extra time for drug offences)
  • Josh Simpson, 25, of Everson Close, Maltby – 15 months in prison

All four pleaded guilty to affray at a hearing in September 2019.

Detective Praises Witnesses and Offers Condolences

“I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to Mr Dix’s family, who have been incredibly brave and resilient throughout this investigation,” said Detective Chief Inspector Jude Ashmore, lead investigator. “The sentencing brings this inquiry to a close, and I’m pleased the four men have been jailed for their part in the events that led to Mr Dix’s death.”
