Facial Recognition Tech Nabs Fleeing Man After Police Assault!

A 26-year-old man was caught red-handed thanks to live facial recognition (LFR) technology – but the drama didn’t stop there. During his arrest on Wardour Street, London, he launched an attack on a police officer and now faces multiple charges.

Facial Recognition Pinpointed the Fugitive

On the evening of Saturday, September 9, 2023, a police van fitted with cutting-edge LFR was scanning the busy streets of W1. At around 8:15pm BST, the system identified the man wanted for skipping a court appearance back in May.

Officers swiftly moved in to detain him. But what followed was a violent scuffle.

Man Assaults Officer, Found With Knives and Drugs

The suspect didn’t go quietly. He assaulted a sergeant from the Metropolitan Police’s Violent Crime Taskforce before being handcuffed. During the arrest, police discovered the man had two knives on him as well as Class B drugs.

“The sergeant was treated for head injuries and thankfully is now in a stable condition,” police confirmed.

The man, who had previous convictions for carrying bladed articles, now faces fresh charges including assaulting an emergency worker and drug possession – on top of his outstanding warrant.

Investigation Ongoing as Man Remains in Custody

The suspect remains locked up as investigations continue. His failure to appear for sentencing at Thames Magistrates’ Court on May 5 has now snowballed into a serious police matter involving violence and drugs.

This case highlights how live facial recognition technology is helping police catch offenders on the run – and the risks officers face when bringing them in.
