Quick Justice as Aggressive Threatener Targeting MP Caught by the Met
James Phillips, 46, from Brampton Park Road, N22, has been nailed for sending malicious messages to Mike Freer MP. Phillips pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates’ Court just one day after his arrest, showcasing the Met’s no-nonsense approach to protecting public officials.
Rapid Police Response After Threatening Call
The trouble started after Mike Freer’s office reported a vile and abusive phone call on 31 January. The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation on 1 February. Thanks to swift detective work, Phillips was identified and arrested on 6 February – a lightning-fast turnaround in the world of criminal probes.
Met Says Threats to MPs Won’t Be Tolerated
Detective Superintendent Will Lexton-Jones praised the quick results: “This incident was first reported to us less than a week ago. Officers carried out urgent enquiries to identify and locate the suspect and detectives have worked tirelessly to secure charges.”
He stressed how seriously the police treat any threats against MPs and government officials.
More Trouble for Phillips as Assault Charge Added
Not content with the malicious communications charge, Phillips also admitted assaulting an emergency worker after trying to strike a police officer while in custody. Sentencing is set for 6 March at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
Met and Operation Bridger Boost MP Security Amid Rising Concerns
This case comes amid growing worries over MP safety. The Met is working hand-in-hand with Operation Bridger, a national security initiative offering protection advice and support across the UK. They’ve stepped up personal security briefings and regularly review safety arrangements for elected officials.
MPs and their staff worried about security issues are urged to contact their local Operation Bridger team. For urgent threats, dial 999 immediately or get in touch with local police.
This conviction is a stark reminder: threats to public figures won’t be tolerated, and the Met remains on high alert to keep MPs safe.
