Grandson Jailed for Ripping Off Grandparents of Nearly £400k

Daniel Tilden, 31, has been locked up for nearly four years after exploiting his elderly grandparents for over £384,000. The man, of no fixed address, played on their trust for a decade before finally facing justice.

Decade-Long Fraud Scheme Exposed

Starting in 2013, Tilden repeatedly visited his grandparents’ home, spinning lies to extract cash. He claimed the money was for everything from a new car to private cancer treatment.

  • Initially withdrew thousands directly from his grandfather’s bank account.
  • When stopped, he coerced the grandfather into getting cashback from supermarkets.
  • Later arranged to meet at cashpoints to continue withdrawals.

Justice Served at Swindon Crown Court

On 24 April, Tilden appeared at Swindon Crown Court. He was sentenced to three years and nine months behind bars.

He was also slapped with a fine and a 10-year restraining order to keep him away from his victims.

Police Praise Teamwork in Complex Investigation

PC Sarah Hardwidge from the Devizes Neighbourhood Policing Team revealed the probe spanned three years with help from medical pros, social care, banks, and local shops.

“Daniel’s offending behaviour towards his grandparents was appalling. He took advantage of their good nature and has caused them lasting distress in their own home.” – PC Sarah Hardwidge

She added: “We’re extremely pleased and relieved at the outcome as it has brought peace to the victims and protected them from further abuse.”

Victim Impact: ‘Home Life Felt Like Being Under Siege’

The grandfather described how he was terrified to refuse Tilden’s demands. He likened living with the constant visits and pressure to being “under siege.”

Tilden had previously been arrested in November last year but repeatedly broke bail conditions barring him from contacting his grandparents.

He was charged under the Serious Crime Act for controlling and coercive behaviour in a family relationship, reflecting how brutal the exploitation was.
