Terror Convict Slapped with New Jail Time
Royal Barnes, 34, a convicted terrorist and supporter of the brutal murder of British soldier Lee Rigby, has been locked up for another four-and-a-half years. The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command caught him flouting his strict notification rules.
What Barnes Did This Time
- Barnes was convicted back in 2014 for inciting terrorism and spreading terror propaganda on YouTube after Rigby’s murder in Woolwich.
- He was originally sentenced to five years and four months in jail for producing videos urging British Muslims to fight the government.
- Released in 2016, he was soon back inside for breaching his licence by having an unreported iPhone.
- After his second release in 2019, Barnes broke more rules around vehicle use, mobile phones, and emails. He also committed fraud using bank cards.
Strong Words from the Met
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “Monitoring those convicted of terrorism-related crimes is a key part of our work to ensure they are not posing any further risk to the public. We won’t hesitate to take action when they break the law.”
New Court Sentence
On 28 March, at the Old Bailey, Barnes pleaded guilty to the breaches and fraud offences. He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years for breaking notification rules, plus an extra year for fraud — served back to back.
He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
