A 36-year-old Merthyr Tydfil man has been jailed for a dangerous police chase during a brutal snowstorm. Carwyn Phillips sparked chaos as he led officers on a hair-raising pursuit on icy roads.

Wanted Man Spotted at Cyfarthfa Retail Park

On January 8, 2025, PC Saunders recognised Phillips’ car at the Cyfarthfa Retail Park Roundabout. Phillips was wanted for an unrelated crime. Despite freezing conditions and an amber weather warning, the officer ordered him to stop – but Phillips hit the accelerator and fled.

  • Phillips paused briefly to let two passengers scramble from the back seat.
  • He then sped the wrong way down the packed A470, risking lives on icy roads.
  • PC Saunders pulled off a tactical move to halt the vehicle.
  • The chase ended when Phillips smashed into the police car.
  • He tried to run but was quickly found hiding in a bush nearby.

14 Months in Jail and a Decade-Plus Driving Ban

“Phillips was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, failing to stop, disqualified driving, and dangerous driving,” police confirmed.

At Cardiff Crown Court on February 9, 2025, Phillips pleaded guilty to all charges. He was slapped with 14 months behind bars and banned from driving for over 10 years.
