Met Police Officer Sacked Over Racist Tweets

PC Ruby Begum has been booted out of the Metropolitan Police without warning after a misconduct hearing uncovered a string of racist posts on her Twitter account. The bombshell hearing on Wednesday, 23 October, ruled her conduct a gross breach of police professional standards.

Racist Tweets Spanning Years

Begum, a member of the Met’s elite Taskforce, was found guilty of posting discriminatory and offensive tweets between 2013 and 2019. Shockingly, these racist remarks remained visible even after she joined as a Special Constable in 2014 and later became a full Police Constable in 2016.

An independent legally-qualified panel slammed her behaviour as completely at odds with Metropolitan Police values. Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, who leads the Taskforce, thundered, “There is absolutely no place within the Met for anyone with racist or otherwise hateful attitudes.”

He added, “Our force prides itself on diversity and inclusivity. Anyone who undermines that has no future here.”

Investigation and Suspension

The scandal erupted after a media tip-off to the Met in August 2021. A formal probe was launched, restricting Begum’s duties before suspending her in August 2022.

The Met handed over the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which allowed a local inquiry. Officers sifted through some 25,000 tweets, confirming enough evidence for a gross misconduct charge.

Dismissal and Lifetime Ban

Following the ruling, Begum is now on the barred list maintained by the College of Policing. This blacklisting means she can never again work for any UK police service, local bodies, the IOPC, or fire and rescue services.

Chief Superintendent Wingrove stressed the importance of rooting out such behaviour. “We rebuild public trust only by taking swift action to remove those who don’t share our values,” he said.
