A shocking New Year’s Day attack in Nelson has rocked New Zealand after a speeding car ploughed into two police officers on foot patrol. Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming, a veteran with 38 years on the force, died from her injuries. Another officer was seriously hurt, while a third suffered a concussion.

The 32-year-old driver didn’t just strike the officers but also rammed a police car before being arrested at the scene. He is now charged and due to appear in court this Friday.

Senior Sergeant Fleming was a respected frontline officer and beloved member of the Nelson community. Police Commissioner Richard Chambers called her “a beautiful soul and a cherished member”. Fleming was also a devoted wife, mother, and daughter.
Her colleague, Senior Sergeant Adam Ramsay, remains in serious but stable condition and is expected to recover fully.
Frightening Night Near New Year’s Eve Festivities
The incident took place in Buxton Square, near the site of New Year celebrations just hours earlier. Police say the driver’s actions appeared deliberate, but the motive remains unclear.
“This was a senseless act by an individual determined to cause harm,” said Commissioner Chambers. “Lyn and Adam were working to keep people safe during a night of celebration. Their efforts ended in a heartbreaking act of violence.”
Nation in Shock as Police Minister Condemns Attack
New Zealand Police Minister Mark Mitchell labelled the attack “a cowardly and targeted act.” The killing has shaken the nation where on-duty police deaths are rare — only 34 since 1890 and the last in 2020.
