A 23-year-old British woman accused of murdering her boyfriend in Dubai remains in custody as her defence prepares to challenge evidence given by prosecution witnesses.
Brooke George, from Gravesend in Kent, is accused of killing fellow Briton William Treeby, 26, after he was stabbed at his apartment on 21 June.
George does not deny stabbing Mr Treeby but maintains that she acted in self-defence after he allegedly assaulted her. The court has heard that she sustained facial injuries on the night, which her defence says supports her account.
She could face a severe sentence, potentially including life imprisonment or the death penalty, if convicted of murder.
Trial adjourned as witnesses recalled
Proceedings have been adjourned until Monday, 21 September, when witnesses who gave evidence against George are expected to be summoned back to court.
The move follows claims by her defence lawyers that there are discrepancies between accounts provided by prosecution witnesses.
Her lawyers have also requested evidence from the person who carried out Mr Treeby’s post-mortem examination as they seek to establish whether the amount of alcohol he had consumed could have contributed to his death.
Reports cited in the case state that Mr Treeby’s blood alcohol concentration was recorded at 188mg/dL.
Former John Lewis worker remains in custody
George, described as an influencer and former John Lewis employee, remains behind bars while the case continues.
Radha Stirling, founder of campaign organisation Detained in Dubai, described the decision to recall witnesses as an important development, saying the statements against George contained alleged discrepancies which had not yet been fully tested in court.
