Nurse Jailed for Drunk Hit-and-Run on Christmas Eve Stripped of Licence
Drunk Nurse Killed Pensioner on Zebra Crossing
Katrina Mahoney, a mother of two and a nurse, has been banned from practising after causing the death of 82-year-old Ron Fealey on Christmas Eve. Mahoney, over twice the legal alcohol limit, hit the retired church treasurer as he crossed a zebra crossing following a Christmas service.
Fled the Scene, Then Lied About Drinking
Mahoney initially fled the scene but returned minutes later, claiming she had only “one Malibu and Baileys.” Mr Fealey suffered a fatal brain injury and died in hospital two days later. Shockingly, Mahoney failed to help him immediately, breaching the core duties expected of a nurse.
Nursing Body Ends Her Career
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) held a hearing over Mahoney’s fitness to practice. Despite her barrister’s claims she’s tackling alcohol problems and showing remorse, the panel found her conduct unacceptable. She has now been formally struck off, ending her nursing career—though an 18-month suspension order allows time for appeal.
Family Mourns a “Caring and Special” Man
Speaking for the late Mr Fealey, his son Mike said his father was a “caring and special individual” who dedicated his life to helping others. He called the tragedy a harsh reminder of the deadly consequences of drink driving and the need for strict professional standards in healthcare.
This grim case underlines the dangers of drunk driving and the heavy price paid when those trusted to care break the law.
