Two Men Convicted in Shocking Death of 75-Year-Old Edinburgh Doctor
Paul Black, 65, has been found guilty of attempting to defeat the ends of justice following a High Court trial in Edinburgh on Friday, 17 May 2024. Earlier, Paul McNaughton, 29, pleaded guilty to the murder of Dr Peter Coshan and the same charge of attempting to defeat justice at Glasgow High Court on 2 August 2023.
Dr Coshan Found Dead Nearly a Month After Disappearance
Dr Coshan was last seen in the Seafield Road area of Edinburgh on Thursday, 11 August 2022 and reported missing the following day. After exhaustive inquiries by Police Scotland’s Major Investigations Teams and partners, his body was discovered on 4 September 2022 near the A696 by Kirkwhelpington village in Northumberland, nearly 100 miles from his home.
Family’s Heartbreaking Tribute Amidst Despicable Crime
“We have been grateful for the constant support from our own family and friends, along with Peter’s friends from Fettes College and university,” the family said. “Their support has helped us through this nightmare and shown the best of human nature.”
“This stands in stark contrast to the worst of human nature shown by the individual who took Peter’s life. We remain horrified that anyone could treat a vulnerable 75-year-old in such a despicable manner. Our life will never be the same, and we will forever ask ‘What if?’ There are no answers now, but we will cherish our memories of Peter and his positive impact on so many.”
“We ask for privacy at this difficult time.”
Detective Calls Crime ‘Horrendous’ as Investigation Wrapped Up
Detective Superintendent Andrew Patrick said: “This horrendous crime has devastated Dr Coshan’s family. McNaughton not only brutally took Peter’s life but coldly disposed of his body nearly 100 miles away.”
“His callous actions showed no regard for Peter’s life or the pain caused to his relatives and friends. This was a complex investigation involving specialist officers working closely with Northumbria Police and forensic teams. We also thank the public for their support throughout.”
