Seventeen Injured as Double-Decker Mounts Pavement Outside London Victoria
Rush hour chaos erupted this morning on Victoria Street, Westminster, when a double-decker bus suddenly mounted the pavement, injuring 17 people. The smash occurred at around 8.20am, sending shockwaves through the packed commuter hotspot outside London Victoria station.
Massive Crash Leaves Bus Front Mangled
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the number 24 double-decker bus crashed into the pavement. The front of the vehicle was left a mangled wreck. Passengers and nearby pedestrians scrambled as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
17 Injured, 15 Hospitalised but No Fatalities
The London Ambulance Service confirmed 17 people were hurt. Fifteen, including the bus driver, were taken to hospital, while two others were treated at the scene and released. Miraculously, police confirmed no one suffered life-threatening injuries.
“We sent multiple ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, a clinical team manager, hazardous area response teams and London’s Air Ambulance. In total, 17 patients were treated, with 15 taken to hospital.” – LAS Spokesperson
Eyewitnesses Recall Horrific Moments
Commuters reported hearing a “massive crash” as the bus slammed onto the pavement. One witness saw an injured woman lying on the ground, with gym-goers rushing to help. The sudden incident sparked panic during the busiest part of the morning.
Police Launch Investigation, Appeal for Witnesses
The Metropolitan Police have launched a probe into the cause of the crash. Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah urged the public:
“We understand this incident will have been very distressing to all involved. We are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam or mobile footage to please come forward.”
Victoria Street remains closed between Wilton Road and Buckingham Palace Road. A diesel spill has also led police to ban smoking in the area for safety reasons.
Transport for London Responds
Rosie Trew, head of bus service delivery at TfL, said:
“Our thoughts are with those injured following the incident at Victoria Street. We are working closely with police and the operator to urgently investigate what happened. Support is available for anyone affected.”
The cause of the crash remains unknown.
