Blazing Battle in Portsmouth Dockyard! Fifty firefighters and support crews raced to tackle a fierce blaze at Portsmouth’s naval base on May 7. The fire tore through piles of hazardous waste and machinery, but heroic efforts stopped it spreading inside a warehouse.
Black Smoke Clouds Over Naval Base
Hampshire Fire and Rescue revealed the fire started in waste containers stacked beside a warehouse. Watch Manager Jamie Wren explained: “The fire began in plastic waste bins, which caused the thick black smoke seen across the skies.” The flames quickly engulfed several forklift trucks and plastic drums, but crucially did not spread to the nearby commercial building.
Two and a Half Hours of Intense Firefighting
Teams from Southsea, Cosham, and Portchester battled the blaze for two and a half hours. Their quick action prevented what could have been a far worse disaster inside the naval base. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Investigation Underway
Officials are now probing the exact cause of the fire. For now, Portsmouth’s dockyard crew can breathe a sigh of relief after a fiery showdown was swiftly contained.
