Shock rise in drivers lying on car insurance to beat soaring premiums

Young drivers driving fraud spike

A worrying new trend has emerged with young drivers increasingly fudging details on their car insurance applications to dodge eye-watering premiums. Data reveals a staggering one in four young motorists now provide false info—a risky move known as non-disclosure.

This desperate attempt to cut costs comes amid unaffordable price hikes hitting especially hard for the young and vulnerable.

Experts warn: Fraud could cost you dearly

Insurance whizzes at Independent Advisor warn that fibbing on applications can backfire massively. “It might seem like a shortcut to save cash, but incorrect details could see your claim denied, your policy cancelled, or coverage refused,” said a spokesperson.

Worse still, failing to inform insurers about changes like adding extra drivers, moving house, changing jobs, or tweaking your car can trigger similar penalties.

Heavy fines and prison loom for cheats

Motor insurance fraud dominates fraudulent claims, with 43,000 UK drivers prosecuted annually. Penalties can include unlimited fines, criminal records, and prison time—up to six months or more.

The expert added: “Bogus claims not only put your cover at risk; they can ruin your chances of getting insurance in the future.”

Fraud on the rise as insurers crack down

Between April 2022 and March 2023, the UK faced a 61% jump in car insurance fraud cases. Insurers meticulously investigate claims using witness statements, scene inspections, and even police reports to catch scammers.

As premiums climb and wallets tighten, drivers are urged to keep it honest—because the price of cheating is far higher than the premium itself.
