Woman Dies in Police Custody After Breathing Trouble
A woman was arrested by Kent Police in Tunbridge Wells just before 8pm on Friday, 23 July. She was taken to Tonbridge Police Station in custody.
The next day, around 1pm on Saturday (24 July), she was found unresponsive in her cell, seemingly struggling to breathe. Paramedics rushed to the scene but, despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead.
Independent Probe Launched Into Custody Death
Following the tragedy, investigators from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) swiftly stepped in. They interviewed the officers involved and reviewed custody procedures.
IOPC Regional Director Graham Beesley said: “My thoughts are with the woman’s next of kin and all those affected by her death. We have made contact with her next of kin and explained our role.”
“It is vital we carry out a thorough, independent investigation into everything that happened during her detention. We will examine custody records, CCTV footage, and the welfare checks made while she was held.”
“Our investigation is still in its early stages.”
Coroner Investigates; Post-Mortem Results Inconclusive
The HM Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem was conducted on Sunday, 25 July. The results were inconclusive, with further tests pending.
No date has been set yet for the inquest opening.
