Strangeways Prison on Lockdown Amid Welfare Incident
The iconic Strangeways Prison, one of the UK’s largest high-security jails, is currently a hive of emergency activity. Located just north of Manchester city centre, the Category A men’s prison holds over 1,200 inmates and was rebuilt after the notorious 1990 Strangeways riot – the biggest in British prison history.
Specialist Negotiators Swarm the Scene
On Wednesday afternoon, around 4:30pm, police were called to Southall Street following concerns for a man’s welfare inside the prison grounds. Specialist negotiators have since arrived alongside emergency services to manage the situation.
Public Urged to Steer Clear
Greater Manchester Police have sealed off Southall Street, warning the public to avoid the area due to ongoing road closures. A GMP spokeswoman confirmed: “It is believed that there is no greater threat to the public.”
The situation at the high-security jail remains fluid, with officers and emergency teams working to resolve the incident safely and swiftly.
