Firefighters to Get Bodycams After Spike in Attacks

The UK is cracking down on rising assaults against firefighters. New body-worn cameras will start recording audio and video from May 1, 2023. The move aims to protect frontline crews, gather crucial evidence, and improve fire service operations.

Nearly 1,000 Firefighters Attacked in a Year

The National Fire Chiefs Council revealed that 983 firefighters were assaulted in the year leading up to April 2022 — a 5% jump on the previous year. Out of these, 60 incidents caused injuries severe enough to need hospital treatment.

  • Verbal abuse made up 55% of attacks
  • Objects thrown at firefighters or equipment accounted for 28%
  • Physical assaults were 6%
  • Harassment stood at 2%
  • Other violence made up 9%

Calls for Tougher Punishments

The National Fire Chiefs Council is demanding harsher penalties for anyone who attacks firefighters, calling such behaviour “heinous”. They insist firefighters deserve respect and dignity while risking their lives.

Derbyshire Fire Boss Backs Bodycams

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service Group Manager David Diggins said: “The benefits that body worn video camera footage will bring to the Service can really transform how we do things.”

He added, “Enabling our crews to continuously improve through debriefing and learning will improve the effectiveness of our service delivery to our communities.”

“We also believe that our communities will support these measures as an effective means of protecting our firefighters while they are attempting to protect themselves, their homes, and their businesses.”

Transparency and Privacy Guaranteed

Bodycam use will follow strict Home Office Principles. Firefighters will clearly announce when recordings start. All footage will be securely managed and fully compliant with data protection laws.
