Holiday Horror: Man Claims He Caught Weil’s Disease Swimming at Popular Somerset Weir
Swim Turns Sour at Warleigh Weir
A day out at the picturesque Warleigh Weir in Somerset has left one man fearing the worst. Billy-Joe Humphries says he contracted Weil’s disease after taking a dip in the weir’s waters. The spot, nestled in Claverton near the Wiltshire border, is a fave for locals and tourists during warm summer months.
What Is Weil’s Disease?
The NHS warns Weil’s disease is a nasty infection caught from animal urine – mainly rats, mice, cows, and pigs. It creeps in when contaminated freshwater or soil enters cuts, eyes, or your mouth. Typical risks include swimming, kayaking, and fishing in infected waters.
Public Warned After Facebook Post
Billy-Joe took to Facebook to share his ordeal and alert fellow swimmers. He urged anyone feeling unwell after a dip at Warleigh Weir or similar spots to seek medical advice.
“If you’ve swum there and have any concerns about your health, see your doctor or call 111 right away,” he warned.
The NHS stresses not to take risks: water adventures are fun, but safety comes first.
