New DVLA Car Tax Scam Hits Portsmouth and Isle of Wight Drivers
Motorists in Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight are being targeted by a fresh DVLA car tax scam. Fraudsters are sending fake texts and making phone calls, pretending to be from the DVLA, promising bogus tax refunds.
Scam Message Promises Fake Refund
The dodgy message claims: “We have recalculated your vehicle tax. You are owed £48.84 due to overpayment. Click the secure link http://******* to claim your refund.” This trick aims to lure drivers into handing over personal details or cash.
DVLA Issues Stark Warning
The DVLA has slammed the scam and warned drivers not to fall for it. They took to Twitter saying: “Hi, we don’t send text messages about vehicle tax refunds, it is a scam. Please delete the message and don’t click the link.”
Authorities stress that the DVLA only contacts motorists by post. No emails, texts, or phone calls about car tax refunds will come from them.
What Drivers Should Do
- Ignore and delete any suspicious texts or calls claiming to be from the DVLA.
- Never click on links in unexpected messages.
- Report scam attempts to Action Fraud or the DVLA directly.
Stay alert and don’t let scammers get one over on you!
