Ex-Firefighter Battles Deadly Disease – Family Appeal Launched
A heartfelt plea has gone out for donations to help Trevor Moyce, a former Isle of Wight firefighter from Wootton, who is fighting Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Diagnosed in early 2017, Trevor’s life has been turned upside down by this ruthless, incurable illness.
From Firefighter to Warrior Against MND
Trevor dedicated 30 years to the fire service, rising to station manager before retiring in 2016. But just months after leaving his post, he was diagnosed with MND – a rare but devastating disease affecting just 2 in 100,000 people.
You might recall the global Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised awareness and funds for MND. Trevor now faces the cruel reality of the disease firsthand.
Rapid Decline and Unthinkable Challenges
The disease has progressed rapidly. In October 2017, Trevor suffered a medical emergency when his diaphragm weakened drastically. He spent over four months in intensive care, missing precious moments like his children’s birthdays.
Following this, he was fitted with a ventilated tracheostomy and now communicates using eye gaze technology.
Family in Focus – Help Needed Now
Trevor is a devoted dad to two young children, aged 9 and 11, staying strong for them despite the hardship. His family home is now overcrowded with essential medical equipment, forcing his bed into the living room.
A crowdfunding campaign is underway to finance a home extension with an accessible bedroom and wet room, giving Trevor the dignity of a proper living space and bathroom.
