Terry Burgess, 82, tragically lost his life in a car crash on the A361 between Beckhampton and Devizes on Saturday evening (16/07) just before 6.45pm. His family has paid a heartfelt tribute to the much-loved local figure.
A Life Well Lived
Terry, who had been married to Bridget for 52 years, was born in Oxford before moving to Devizes. There, he met Bridget at the local Young Farmers club. He was a talented designer who ran his own handcrafted sign business for over 40 years, creating hundreds of unique signs for houses, schools, golf courses, and pubs across the community.
Earlier in his life, Terry worked as an artificial inseminator for the milk marketing board, covering farms across Wiltshire. A graduate of Lackham College, he was deeply knowledgeable about farming and often helped his brother-in-law, Brian Plank, on the farm.
Passions and Hobbies
Known as a fitness fan, Terry enjoyed tennis, squash, and was a proud member of the Outlaws Skittle Team in the local farmers’ league. In recent years, he was often seen cycling up Redhorn Hill or walking the local fields. He also shared Bridget’s love for horse racing, frequently visiting Newbury and Wincanton racecourses.
Terry’s greatest passion was cars, dedicating hours to keeping up with the latest automotive technology. He also loved relaxing in Bridget’s stunning cottage garden, surrounded by her beautiful flowers.
Family and Ongoing Investigation
Terry is survived by his wife Bridget, brother Raymond in New Zealand, sister Hilary in South Africa, and his devoted in-laws and nieces and nephews. His family says he will be “dearly missed by all who knew him.”
Wiltshire Police continue to investigate the collision and urge any witnesses to come forward. If you have information, call the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting log 295 from July 16, or email [email protected].
