Murder Probe Launched After Woman’s Body Found in Lewes Park
Woman’s Body Discovered in Bin by Dog Walker
A grisly murder investigation is underway after a woman’s body was found stuffed in a bin in a Lewes recreation ground. The grim discovery was made by a dog walker around 12.30pm on Wednesday, November 13, near Landport Road.
Significant Head Injury Sparks Murder Inquiry
At first, police treated the death as unexplained. But a closer look revealed a serious head injury. Detectives have now classified the case as murder. A post-mortem will take place on Thursday, November 14, to confirm the exact cause of death.
Man Arrested on Suspicion of Murder
A 41-year-old man with no fixed address was arrested in Lewes on Thursday morning. He remains in custody this evening. Detective Chief Inspector Chris Friday of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team is leading the case.
“Early signs suggest the body has been at the spot since mid-October,” DCI Friday said. “We believe we know the identity of the woman, and her next-of-kin have been informed.”
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Info
Detectives want to hear from anyone missing a wheely bin or who may have spotted one dumped in the undergrowth at the scene in recent weeks. The area was busy with crowds for Bonfire Night fireworks, so police urge anyone who noticed suspicious activity to come forward.
They’re also seeking reports of anyone seen wheeling a bin around Landport Road, Stansfield Road, Arundel Green, or nearby in the last three to four weeks.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police online or call 101, quoting Operation Stafford. Officers will maintain a presence at the scene and conduct house-to-house inquiries.
