Met Police Clamp Down on Social Gatherings in London
The Met has stepped up patrols across London after new Coronavirus rules slashed the social gathering limit from 30 to just six people. The changes kicked in on Monday, 14 September, aiming to curb the virus’s spread and save lives.
Officers Ready to Enforce Tough New Limits
Police are now on the lookout for groups exceeding six in public spaces. They’ll follow the ‘four Es’ strategy: Engage, Explain, Encourage, and Enforce. Those flouting the rules risk £100 fines that double with repeat offences — topping out at a whopping £3,200.
Londoners Urged to Keep Following Rules
So far, most Londoners have played by the rules. The Met urges everyone to keep up the good work: maintain social distancing, respect new limits, and protect yourself, your mates, and your family.
Some Gatherings Still Allowed—With Strict Conditions
Certain gatherings are exempt, including those organised by businesses or charities that conduct proper risk assessments. Exceptions also cover work-related meet-ups, sports events, protests, and emergency aid situations — but only if all safety measures are in place.
