‘Nicest Judge in the World’ Frank Caprio Dies Aged 88

Judge Frank Caprio, famously known as the “nicest judge in the world,” has passed away at 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Caprio won hearts across the globe with his gentle, compassionate courtroom style.

A Viral Sensation from Rhode Island

Caprio served nearly 40 years on the bench in Providence, Rhode Island. His kind-hearted rulings, mostly involving minor traffic offences, became internet gold. Clips from his TV show Caught in Providence racked up over a billion views worldwide before his retirement in 2023.

His courtroom was a stage for empathy, patience, and a touch of humour — setting him apart from typical hardline judges. In one memorable case, he dismissed a red-light ticket for a bartender earning just $4 an hour. In another, he waived fines for a grieving mother who’d lost her son.

Tributes Flood In

Caprio’s Instagram, where he had over 3.2 million followers, confirmed his death on Wednesday, calling him “beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people.”

Just a day earlier, still in hospital, he posted: “Unfortunately I’ve had a setback, I’m back in the hospital now, and I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more.”

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee hailed him as “more than a jurist – a symbol of empathy on the bench, showing us what is possible when justice is tempered with humanity.”

A Legacy of Justice and Humanity

Beyond the bench, Caprio used his platform to spotlight inequality in the justice system. He highlighted how “almost 90% of low-income Americans are forced to battle civil issues like health care, unjust evictions, veterans benefits and, yes, even traffic violations, alone.”

His legacy lives on, inspiring millions with a vision of fairness, kindness, and true justice.
