Man on the Loose After Attempted Rape in Southampton Park
Police are hunting a balaclava-clad attacker after a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Riverside Park, Southampton, on Saturday night.
Shocking Attack in Riverside Park
Around 8.30pm, the victim was walking along Woodmill Lane when a man, wearing a black hoody and a balaclava, grabbed and assaulted her before fleeing the scene.
Specialist officers are now supporting the woman, while police units, including the dog squad, scour the park for clues. A crime scene remains in place and extra patrols will continue day and night.
Police Plea: Did You See Anything?
“This incident will no doubt cause concern, especially among women and girls,” said Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Watson. “Our top priority is finding the person responsible.
“Were you in the park last night? Did you spot anyone acting suspiciously? Have mobile phone footage that might help? Please get in touch.”
“You’ll see more officers patrolling the area—don’t hesitate to talk to them if you’re worried.”
Ongoing Efforts to Tackle Violence Against Women
DCI Watson reassured the public that recent sexual offence suspects in Southampton parks have been arrested and charged. Violence against women and girls remains a key police priority.
He said: “We work closely with partners on education in schools, the Safe Places scheme, weekend patrols in the city centre, and crack down on offenders. Domestic violence prevention is also a major focus.”
“We are pushing hard on this investigation and value your support.”
