Charlton Shisha Lounge Faces Early Close Over Crime Fears
Hayatt Lounge, a popular shisha and late-night venue in Charlton, is under threat. On August 26, Greenwich Council’s Licensing Review Sub-Committee examined its licence amid rising crime concerns. The Metropolitan Police pushed for a 1.30am closing time after a spate of serious incidents nearby, but Hayatt warns this could kill the business.
Police Raise Alarm Over Violent Crime
The Met revealed 13 major crimes near Hayatt since February 2024, including stabbings, armed robberies, and huge brawls. The worst was on July 27, when a security guard was seriously hurt by a nitrous oxide canister attack. Police say the venue’s late hours attract violent troublemakers.
“We recommend Hayatt ends all licensable activities by 1am and stops vertical drinking, live performances, and loud music,” said David Graham, the Met’s legal rep.
Council Strikes a Compromise With Later Closing
The committee accepted some police concerns but gave Hayatt a partial win. The venue can stay open until 3am Monday to Wednesday and 4am Thursday to Sunday, though licensable activities must finish 30 minutes earlier. Hayatt urged police to boost support for staff and patrons’ safety instead of slashing hours.
Management Pleads for Cooperation, Warns of Job Losses
Hayatt’s lawyer Gary Grant blasted the proposed 1.30am curfew, revealing footfall dropped 74% after temporary restrictions hit in July. He called for teamwork with police to tackle crime, warning shutting venues won’t solve policing gaps.
“Closing late-night spots due to police resource crunch would be unfair and damaging to the community,” said Grant.
General Manager Gemma Creamer added that the police conditions won’t stop crime but will ruin the venue’s vibe. Councillor Ann-Marie Cousins backed Hayatt, praising efforts to curb issues. PC Mindaugas Alsaukas, who launched the review, confirmed a positive working relationship with the lounge.
With 50 staff depending on Hayatt, all eyes are on Greenwich Council’s next move and how Charlton’s nightlife will survive the crackdown.
