Nottingham’s New Anti-Theft Blitz Slashes Mobile Phone Snatches
Nottingham city centre’s latest police crackdown on distraction thefts is already paying off. Operation Cloud, launched just two weeks ago, targets the spike in mobile phone robberies at coffee shops and fast-food joints.
How The Scam Works—and How Cops Are Fighting Back
Sergeant Paul Whitehead from the City Centre neighbourhood policing team explained the common trick. “Victims sit enjoying their coffee when someone asks for directions,” he said. “That person then covers the phone on the table with a piece of paper and nabs it while the victim’s distracted.”
To smash the crooks, officers are handing out crime prevention postcards and posters urging the public to stay alert. They’ve stepped up both plain-clothes and high-visibility patrols to catch thieves in the act and deter new ones. Covert tactics are in play, too.
Community Effort: Schools, Universities Get the Message
The police are teaming up with local universities to spread the word to students, alongside a crime prevention assembly at a local school. “We’ve also ramped up social media posts,” Sgt Whitehead added, “to make sure everyone knows the risks.”
Big Drop in Theft Reports—Are Phone Thieves on the Run?
The results speak for themselves. Theft reports have plunged from 13 in three weeks before the operation to just 1 in the last ten days. “The operation is already having an impact,” said Sgt Whitehead.
Keep Your Phone Safe: Tips From The Police
The postcards spell out clear dos and don’ts for staying safe:
- Don’t: Leave belongings unattended, jot down PINs, or make it easy for thieves.
- Do: Carry only necessary cash, use PIN or pattern locks on your phone, keep valuables close in pockets or bags, and use phone tracking software like ‘Find my iPhone’ or ‘PREY’.
