Wandsworth Road Chaos: Fiery Crash After Police Chase
The A3036 Wandsworth Road near the Union Road junction in Southwest London was shut down overnight following a dramatic police chase and a fiery crash.
High-Speed Chase Ends in Flames
Just after 1:30am on Monday, officers from the Met pursued a Land Rover Discovery that refused to stop. The chase ended when the vehicle smashed, flipped over, and burst into flames close to Union Grove in Lambeth.
Emergency crews from the London Fire Brigade rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze.
Four Arrested Amid Weapon and Theft Claims
The Met Police confirmed four men were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, failing to stop for police, and aggravated vehicle theft.
Two of those men face additional charges linked directly to the police chase and other offences.
Road Reopens After Early Morning Probe
Wandsworth Road was closed at around 1:30 am for a collision investigation. After overnight work, it finally reopened at 6:40 am.
Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “At around 01:49hrs on Monday, 9 January a Land Rover Discovery was involved in a single-vehicle collision in Wandsworth Road, close to the junction with Union Grove, in Lambeth. The driver had failed to stop for police nearby. As a result of the collision, the vehicle overturned and caught fire. The London Fire Brigade assisted. Four men were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, failing to stop for police and aggravated vehicle theft. There were no reports of any serious injuries.”
