Man arrested and firearm recovered after 18-hour armed stand-off in sleepy village Armed police officers staked out a property in Elmbridge Road from around midday on Wednesday (May 24) A man has been arrested after an 18-hour stand-off with armed police in Cranleigh, which finally culminated in a firearm being recovered from the house. Armed police descended on the property, in Elmbridge Road, at around midday on Wednesday (May 24) with dog units also deployed at the scene. Surrey Police confirmed the incident was “not linked to any terrorist-related activities”, adding five neighbouring properties had been evacuated. Officers “started negotiations with the occupant” and remained in a stand-off with the man until 5.30am on Thursday (May 25) . Officers were involved in an 18-hour stand. Chief Superintendent Jerry Westerman said: “Clearly, this incident has had a significant impact on the local community. We apologise for the disruption caused and are grateful to the people of Cranleigh for their understanding and patience while we resolved this situation.” “Officers attended a property in Elmbridge Road, Cranleigh just before midday yesterday [Wednesday] following concerns for the safety of a man. “A number of officers, including armed officers and dog handlers, contained the property and officers started negotiations with the occupant. The incident ‘ended safely’ at around 5.30am on Thursday. “At around 5.30am [Thursday], the man came to the door of his property and was detained under the Mental Health Act. “He was subsequently arrested after he made a further threat to an officer. “A firearm has been recovered from the property.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jHS6vkB2Wo
