Aldi cracks down on cramped chickens with cheeky 20% more space
Aldi boosts chicken welfare standards
Aldi, Britain’s fourth biggest supermarket, is shaking up the poultry scene. By October 2024, all its fresh chicken will enjoy 20% more room than the usual industry standard. That means chickens get extra space to stretch their wings, splash in dust baths, and roam free—just like nature intended.
More perks for clucky customers
The new rules also ensure birds benefit from plenty of environmental treats like straw bales, perches, pecking objects, and natural sunlight. For shoppers, that means higher welfare chicken without breaking the bank.
Backing British farmers all the way
All of Aldi’s fresh chicken is 100% British farmed. To ease farmers into the new standards, Aldi is shelling out serious financial support throughout 2024 and 2025. This move not only improves animal welfare but strengthens local farming communities.
Big words from Aldi’s top buyer
“We’re already one of the UK’s largest providers of responsibly farmed chicken,” said Julie Ashfield, Aldi UK’s Managing Director of Buying. “We’ve been working closely with our suppliers to reduce stocking density. Thanks to this latest improvement, customers will have access to higher welfare chicken at unbeatable value.”
