Surrey Police Launches Canal Watch to Tackle Nasty Anti-Social Behaviour on Woking Towpath

Surrey Police have kicked off a bold new campaign – Canal Watch – to crack down on rising anti-social behaviour and shocking sexual exposure incidents along the Basingstoke Canal towpath in Woking.

First-of-its-Kind Community Patrols Hit the Towpath

Launching on 12 April, Canal Watch is the South of England’s first community initiative of its kind. It’s a joint effort between Surrey Police, Woking Borough Council, Neighbourhood Watch, Basingstoke Canal Authority, and the Basingstoke Canal Society.

Volunteers decked out in bright, marked tabards will patrol the towpath all week, spotting and reporting suspicious activity, anti-social behaviour, or damage. While they won’t take direct reports from the public, their presence aims to boost safety and deter troublemakers.

Strong Support from Police and Local Officials

Inspector Dave Bentley, Woking Borough Commander, said:

“Everybody should feel safe while out and about in Woking. These incidents are a serious concern for us and the community. We’ve already seen important leads from our appeals for information and hope Canal Watch will help stop these offences and catch those responsible.”

Camilla Edmiston, Community Safety Manager at Woking Borough Council, added:

“Our outdoor spaces, like the canal towpaths, have become busier since the pandemic. By working together, we want everyone to feel confident and safe enjoying this popular spot.”

Community Champions Step Up to Keep Canal Safe

Ian Moore, a longtime Basingstoke Canal Society member, stated:

“I’ve helped maintain and protect the canal for years. The canal has become a peaceful escape for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers. This brilliant community effort will keep it safe and welcoming for everyone.”

On 12 April, locals can visit an information stand on the towpath to chat with officers and raise any concerns.
