Motorists Urged to Avoid Eastern Road This Weekend Amid Major Bridge Repairs
Drivers are being warned to steer clear of Eastern Road from October 14 to 16. Essential repairs on the Eastern Road water bridge mean major delays and lane closures.
Full Southbound Closures Scheduled
The southbound carriageway will be fully closed:
- From 9pm Friday, October 14 to 6am Saturday, October 15
- Then again from 4pm Saturday, October 15 until 5am Monday, October 17 at the latest
During these closures, northbound traffic will be squeezed down to just one lane. At all other times over the weekend, southbound traffic will run with only one lane open.
Plan Ahead – Use Alternative Routes
Fully signed diversions will guide vehicles and pedestrians around the work zone. Drivers are urged to plan journeys in advance and use alternatives like the M275 to get in and out of the city smoothly.
Why the Disruption?
The bridge joints are being replaced to keep the structure safe and sound. Normally, such maintenance is done overnight, but this repair needs several solid days for the new joints and road surface to properly set.
Colas, the contractors, chose this weekend carefully. They considered factors like commuters, school holidays, Portsmouth FC matches, and big events. They apologise for any inconvenience and thank everyone for their patience.
Extra Work to Avoid Future Closures
To cut down on future disruptions, the closure will also be used to carry out street lighting repairs and drain cleansing along Eastern Road.
