A hotel in Crewe, used to house single male asylum seekers, has been closed following joint efforts by Cheshire Constabulary and the Home Office.
Local Community Alarmed by Spike in Crime
For months, Cheshire police worked closely with the Home Office after numerous reports of trouble at the Crewe Arms Hotel raised concerns among locals. The Nantwich Road site had been accommodating around 115 asylum seekers until October 2025. Since then, numbers steadily dropped, leading to a government decision to prioritise the hotel’s closure. The last resident left just last week.
Police Stress Closure Is About Safety, Not Politics
Assistant Chief Constable Alison Ross welcomed the move but made it clear the police are not targeting asylum seekers. “This isn’t a political stance,” she said. “We must protect vulnerable people staying in these premises as well as the wider community.” Ross confirmed officers have dealt with an unacceptable number of crimes and disorder incidents around the hotel in the past year. While police wanted the hotel closed sooner, they cooperated with the Home Office to manage resources effectively during the transition. “I’d like to thank the Home Office for their support,” Ross added. “I truly believe this outcome is best for everyone involved.”
