New Boss Takes the Helm at RNAS Culdrose’s 824 Naval Air Squadron
Big changes at RNAS Culdrose! Cdr Chris Jones has handed over command of the 824 Naval Air Squadron to the new skipper, Cdr Alex Kelley, in a formal handover ceremony. The Merlin helicopter squadron’s crew, both men and women, gathered to welcome their new leader.
Meet Cdr Alex Kelley: A Veteran Ready to Lead
Cdr Kelley, a Royal Navy stalwart since 2005, brings serious expertise. She trained as an observer on the Merlin Mk1 and swiftly moved to the current Merlin Mk2. Having served as both an instructor and senior observer at 824 NAS, she knows the squadron inside out. The unit is a key player, responsible for training helicopter aircrew and engineers while also guarding UK waters.
A Career Full of Distinction and Firsts
Cdr Kelley’s stellar career includes commanding the Guard of Honour at King Charles’ coronation last year. On top of that, she leads HMS Oardacious Valkyries, the first all-female military team daring to row the Atlantic Ocean.
Cdr Kelley’s Vision: Proud Tradition and Powerful Teamwork
“I am deeply honoured to take command of 824 Naval Air Squadron, a unit with a proud tradition of excellence and dedication,” Cdr Kelley said. “I look forward to working with the talented men and women of this squadron as we continue our vital work in training and operations.”
With leadership like this, 824 NAS is set to remain at the forefront of naval aviation and protect the UK’s seas with style and strength.
