Sussex Army Officer Snags Top Royal Honour While Running Family Funeral Business
King’s Volunteer Reserve Medal for Lt Col Charlie Field
Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Field, a dedicated Army Reserve officer and Deputy Chairman of Sussex’s family-run CPJ Field & Co Funeral Directors, has been awarded the prestigious King’s Volunteer Reserve Medal. He was one of only four recipients recognised in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours.
Balancing Boots and Business
CPJ Field & Co is Britain’s oldest funeral director, operating since 1690 and now in its tenth generation. While managing this historic family firm across East and West Sussex, Lt Col Field has served over two decades in the Army Reserve. “Life as a reservist is a tough juggling act,” he admitted. “Fitting in personal and military commitments can be a struggle, but the sense of purpose and community make it worthwhile.”
Leading The Royal Yeomanry with Distinction
As Commanding Officer of The Royal Yeomanry Regiment, Lt Col Field commands around 500 reserve soldiers. Under his leadership, the regiment has deployed troops on operations in Iraq, Mali, and Poland, supporting NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence. The reconnaissance regiment has bases from Nottingham to Cardiff and holds the title of the senior Armoured Regiment in the Army Reserves.
A Career of Service and Pride
Lt Col Field’s military journey began in 2000 with the University Officer Training Corps at Leicester University, where he studied Politics. Initially aiming to join the Queen’s Royal Lancers, he was mobilised as a Troop Leader before choosing to remain a reservist with the Royal Yeomanry.
“I was incredibly surprised but immeasurably proud and grateful to be honoured. I’ve worked with some truly exceptional people, especially during my time as Commanding Officer of The Royal Yeomanry.”– Lt Col Charlie Field
Memorable milestones include leading soldiers in Iraq in 2004 and heading the Royal Yeomanry in the procession for King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s coronation. “That was a proud moment I’ll never forget,” he said.
Dedication Through Thick and Thin
Reflecting on over 20 years of service, Lt Col Field said: “I’ve been in the Army since I was 18—my entire adult life. I’ve seen how we can bring good even amid terrible challenges like COVID.”
“Along the way, I’ve made lifelong friendships and never left a role without new connections. I don’t regret a single moment.”
