Heartbroken Family Pleads for Justice Over Elderly Woman’s Death After Barnet Burglary
More than a year after the tragic death of 77-year-old Maureen Whale in her Barnet home, her family renews desperate appeals for information. Maureen died following a break-in at her lifelong residence on Bells Hill just before 6pm on 4 December 2018.
Stress-Induced Death After Harrowing Break-In
A post-mortem revealed Maureen’s death was caused by coronary heart disease, triggered by the severe stress of the burglary. Despite the police’s efforts, no arrests have been made. A £20,000 reward remains for information leading to a conviction.
The case is featured today on BBC1’s Crimewatch Roadshow, as detectives urge witnesses or anyone with key information to come forward.
Family’s Heartbreaking Plea
“We are devastated that our beloved Aunt Maureen, a fiercely independent lady nearing her 78th birthday, was confronted by three cowardly burglars while alone in her home,” said a family member.
“We dread to think what went through her mind during that terrifying ordeal. We still hear her final, heartbreaking 999 call in our heads.”
“Those responsible continue living their lives, enjoying time with their own families. We urge them to listen to the fear in her voice and have courage to come forward.”
Three Suspects Caught on CCTV
- First suspect: climbed over the gate, wearing a black zip-through gilet, light long-sleeve top, and dark woolly hat.
- Second suspect: wore a long-sleeve top with dark patches, hood up, dark trousers, and light trainers.
- Lookout suspect: stood at a window, dressed in a dark hooded jacket with baseball cap underneath, light jogging bottoms, and dark trainers.
Police also want to identify the driver of a small four-door hatchback, possibly a Skoda Fabia, seen driving past shortly before the break-ins began.
Linked Burglaries and Stolen Items
The burglary at Maureen’s home is connected to two other break-ins on Bells Hill and one in nearby Sampson Avenue occurring on the same day. Stolen items include jewellery, foreign currency (Turkish Lira and Euros), and cash.
- Bells Hill break-ins: entry via rear balcony doors, around 5.35pm.
- Sampson Avenue burglary: entry via rear patio doors, took place sometime after 11.45am.
- Attempted burglary at Raydean Road, no items stolen.
Maureen’s black leather handbag, containing personal belongings, was found stuffed in a hedge near Ravenscroft Park days after the crime.
Detectives Issue Emotional Appeal
Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh, leading the inquiry, said: “It’s heartbreaking that Maureen died over a few pounds from her purse. She was an adventurous, independent woman who travelled the world — to lose her at home in this way is awful.”
“We believe the thieves, who were experienced and working as a team, may have been shocked by the unintended consequences. I urge their families and partners to come forward and help bring justice for Maureen.”
“For those holding information, just imagine it was your mum or nan. This crime was not just a burglary — it turned tragic.”

Heartbreaking 999 Call
During the chilling emergency call, Maureen was heard distressed and struggling to breathe before collapsing:
Operator: “Police, what’s your emergency?” Maureen: “I’ve just been burgled.” Operator: “How old are you?” Maureen: “I’m 77.” Operator: “Are you on your own?” Maureen: “Yes… I’m shaking, sorry.” Operator: “Do you need an ambulance?” Maureen: *heavy breathing* Operator: “I’m calling an ambulance now, hold on.” Maureen: “I can’t talk, sorry.”
The police arrived shortly after, but tragically, Maureen did not survive.
