Knife-Wielding Deportee Causes Chaos in Peterborough
Robert Mugatsi, 47, sparked a tense standoff with immigration officers at a Peterborough home last August. Wanted on a deportation warrant, he didn’t go quietly.
Dangerous Standoff at Orton Wistow
- Officers arrived at Mugatsi’s Linnet, Orton Wistow house around 6.30pm on 25 August.
- Mugatsi tried to flee over a fence but retreated back inside when chased.
- He brandished a large seven-inch hunting knife, pointing it at officers.
- Threatening them, he held the blade to his own throat as officers drew batons and backed away.
- Mugatsi then fled before the police even arrived.
Scene Repeats Months Later – Dangerous Escape and Attacks
- On 17 December, officers spotted Mugatsi driving near Papworth Everard.
- He gave a false name and passed a breath test but suddenly pushed an officer and bolted into a field.
- After a chase, he tried to punch cops and was tasered—without success.
- Mugatsi vanished in the dark but was found hours later back at the Iway Inn Hotel.
- This time he armed himself with a metal paint roller and bar, charged an officer shouting, “It’s going to be a big fight.”
- He was tasered again and arrested.
Jailed After Violent Rampage
Mugatsi was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital, where he kicked an officer during assessment in A&E.
On Wednesday 26 April at Peterborough Crown Court, the 47-year-old from Ermine Street, Papworth Everard, was jailed for 22 months.
He was convicted of:
- Two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker
- One count of common assault of an emergency worker
- Using a vehicle without insurance
- Driving while disqualified
- Affray
The violent and reckless actions of Mugatsi forced multiple emergency responses and ended with a prison sentence. Officers praised each other’s bravery during the dangerous encounters.
