Knife-Wielding Deportee Causes Chaos in Peterborough

Robert Mugatsi, 47, sparked a tense standoff with immigration officers at a Peterborough home last August. Wanted on a deportation warrant, he didn’t go quietly.

Dangerous Standoff at Orton Wistow

  • Officers arrived at Mugatsi’s Linnet, Orton Wistow house around 6.30pm on 25 August.
  • Mugatsi tried to flee over a fence but retreated back inside when chased.
  • He brandished a large seven-inch hunting knife, pointing it at officers.
  • Threatening them, he held the blade to his own throat as officers drew batons and backed away.
  • Mugatsi then fled before the police even arrived.

Scene Repeats Months Later – Dangerous Escape and Attacks

  • On 17 December, officers spotted Mugatsi driving near Papworth Everard.
  • He gave a false name and passed a breath test but suddenly pushed an officer and bolted into a field.
  • After a chase, he tried to punch cops and was tasered—without success.
  • Mugatsi vanished in the dark but was found hours later back at the Iway Inn Hotel.
  • This time he armed himself with a metal paint roller and bar, charged an officer shouting, “It’s going to be a big fight.”
  • He was tasered again and arrested.

Jailed After Violent Rampage

Mugatsi was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital, where he kicked an officer during assessment in A&E.

On Wednesday 26 April at Peterborough Crown Court, the 47-year-old from Ermine Street, Papworth Everard, was jailed for 22 months.

He was convicted of:

  • Two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker
  • One count of common assault of an emergency worker
  • Using a vehicle without insurance
  • Driving while disqualified
  • Affray

The violent and reckless actions of Mugatsi forced multiple emergency responses and ended with a prison sentence. Officers praised each other’s bravery during the dangerous encounters.
