Stonehenge Traffic Chaos: New Verge Ban on A303

Traffic nightmares on the A303 near Stonehenge have sparked a temporary ban on stopping vehicles. The new order bars cars from halting on the verge between Parkhouse roundabout and Winterbourne Stoke – in both directions.

Why the Clampdown?

Barney Appleton, Traffic Management and Road Safety Officer with Wiltshire Police, revealed the move follows a flurry of public complaints since May 17. Drivers were pulling over on the grass verge, with passengers wandering onto the road to snap pictures of Stonehenge.

“This caused lorries and other vehicles to swerve into the middle of the carriageway,” said Appleton. “We also had reports of drivers pushing back temporary barriers to park in illegal spots nearby.”

Stay Safe, Stay Legal

Wiltshire Police urge motorists to think twice before stopping or parking near Stonehenge on the A303. Appleton warned: “Please drive and park safely, legally and responsibly. We’re working closely with Highways England and will monitor this ban’s impact in the coming weeks.”

The message is clear – snap the ancient stones from safe spots or risk hefty fines and causing dangerous chaos on one of England’s busiest routes.
