At least 63 dead in devastating crash on Uganda’s Kampala–Gulu Highway

Horror Crash Rocks Kampala–Gulu Highway

A tragic road accident early Tuesday morning has claimed the lives of at least 63 people, with many more injured, officials confirm. The deadly smash occurred just after midnight at Kitaleeba Village near Asili Farm along the busy Kampala–Gulu Highway.

Police spokesperson SP Kananura Michael revealed the grim details, saying the catastrophe unfolded around 12:15 a.m.

Four Vehicles Involved in Fiery Collision

The crash involved a brutal collision between four vehicles: a Nile Star Coaches Isuzu bus (UBF 614X), a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB), a Tata lorry (UBK 647C), and another Isuzu bus from Planet Company (UAM 045V).

Overtaking Gone Wrong Causes Deadly Head-On Smash

Preliminary investigations show the Nile Star bus was overtaking the Tata lorry when the disaster struck. At the same time, the Planet Company bus was overtaking a Toyota Surf from the opposite direction.

The two buses collided head-on. One driver swerved to avoid a direct crash, but instead, they clipped side-on, sparking a horrific chain reaction. Other vehicles lost control and flipped multiple times.

Every occupant either died or suffered severe injuries. Survivors were rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby clinics, while bodies were taken to the hospital mortuary for post-mortems and identification.

Police Warn Drivers: Overtaking Dangers Leading Cause of Crashes

SP Kananura urged all motorists to drive with extreme caution and avoid reckless overtaking – “one of the leading causes of accidents in Uganda,” he stressed.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to the injured,” said the police spokesperson.

Deadly Stretch: Kampala–Gulu Highway Crisis

The Kampala–Gulu Highway is a key artery for passengers and goods, linking the capital to northern Uganda. Recent months have seen a sharp rise in fatal crashes, largely blamed on speeding and reckless driving, authorities warn.
