Fiery Drill at Knole: Firefighters Test Emergency Skills at Historic Mansion

Fire crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) took on a high-stakes training drill at Knole, the Grade I listed mansion in Sevenoaks, famous for its priceless artefacts. The mock fire exercise put the team’s response to the test on March 21, 2024.

Massive Fire Response Rehearsed

Ten fire engines, two bulk water carriers, a height vehicle, and officers joined forces with the National Trust staff in a simulated blaze at the 600-year-old former archbishop’s palace. The event focused on protecting rare artwork and delicate 17th-century textiles from devastating fire damage.

Experts Stress Importance of Preparedness

Steve Burwell, KFRS Group Manager for Building Safety, said: “Historical buildings like Knole present unique challenges. These drills are vital to ensure we can respond quickly and effectively.”

Hannah Kay, Knole’s General Manager, added: “Working closely with KFRS helps us sharpen our emergency plans to protect our precious collections should disaster strike.”

Ongoing Training to Protect Kent’s Heritage

KFRS regularly runs joint exercises at notable sites across Kent, including Canterbury Cathedral, Rochester Cathedral, and Dreamland Margate. Steve Lewis, KFRS Resilience Manager, explained that these drills are essential to keep procedures sharp and boost teamwork with partner agencies.

The fire service’s commitment to working with the National Trust underlines their shared goal to protect the county’s cultural treasures for future generations.
